History of the department
The history of the Department of Algebra and Geometry of the Faculty of Science at Palacký University follows a long tradition of teaching mathematics, which began as early as 1579 at the Jesuit University in Olomouc.
The first institution established after the renewal of the University in Olomouc in 1946 was the Institute of Mathematics at the Faculty of Pedagogy and Science; later, in 1952, the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at the Faculty of Pedagogy of Palacky University was established. In 1953, an independent Department of Mathematics headed by Prof. J. Metelka was established at the newly founded Institute of Pedagogy. After the establishment of the Faculty of Science of Palacký University, it was divided into the Departments of Algebra and Geometry, Mathematical Analysis and Methodology of Mathematics and Elementary Mathematics. The Department of Theoretical Cybernetics and Mathematical Informatics was separated from the Department of Algebra and Geometry in the 1970s, while the Department of Mathematical Methodology and Elementary Mathematics became part of it in 1989.
At present, the Department of Algebra and Geometry of the Faculty of Science of Palacký University provides Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Mathematics and analogous forms of study in Descriptive Geometry. The Department also offers a bachelor's and a master's programme in discrete mathematics and, last but not least, an accredited doctoral programme with the possibility of defending a dissertation in the fields of algebra and geometry and the didactics of mathematics.
