This year’s first exhibition, entitled ¡Mexico! Colours! Scents! Flavours!, will take visitors to the exotic world of Mexican flora in the Faculty of Science Botanical Garden in Olomouc. The exhibition, curated by Eva Kubátová, will be open from 11 March to 13 April 2025 in the Josef Otruba Hall.
This travelling ethnobotanical exhibition will present Mexican crops and plants in the broader context of Mexican history, culture and society. “The author is a Spanish translator, blogger, and writer. At the opening, she also presented her project Mexicopaedia, which has grown from an internet blog into three printed guides to Mexico,” said Václav Dvořák, head of the botanical garden.
More than 26,000 species of plants grow in Mexico. Visitors to the exhibition will learn interesting information about the most important Mexican plants, such as vanilla, agave, nopal (prickly pear) cactus, and Mexican marigold. “Mexican marigold is an essential cultural plant in Mexico. During the Day of the Dead celebration, they mark the way for the deceased back to the warmth of their homes,” added Dvořák.
Admission is free.
