Olomouc firefighters will practice evacuating people from the tenth floor of the Bedřich Václavek Dormitory on Tuesday afternoon. The pre-announced tactical exercise was arranged by the management of the UP Accommodation and Dining Facilities (SKM) with the Olomouc Region Fire and Rescue Service to allow both parties to check their procedures in case of a fire in this high-rise building.
"At the same time, in cooperation with professional firefighters, we will strengthen the awareness of employees and students on how to behave in an emergency and thus protect themselves and their surroundings as best as possible. We will not be triggering the siren in the building to prevent any panic," said Libor Kolář, head of the SKM, adding that students and employees will be informed about the exercise in advance. "We will also agree with the students in advance whether they want to participate in the evacuation exercise voluntarily," he added.
The drill will include evacuation of people from a window using an extension ladder/platform, with members of the fire department serving as role players, but also a mock smoke-out and evacuation of the interior of the entire tenth floor of the dormitory using marked evacuation routes.
"Depending on the outcome of Tuesday's exercise, we will update the SKM evacuation plan," added SKM safety technician Jiří Klimíček, adding that the other floors will not be evacuated.
The fire drill will take place on Tuesday, 21 March at 1:00 PM in the building of Block A of the Bedřich Václavek Dormitory, Šmeralova 8. The duration of the drill is estimated at approximately 30 minutes.
