Nine students from Europe, Asia and Africa participated in a seminar for Fischer scholarship recipients, which is awarded annually by the Faculty of Science to doctoral students from abroad.

During the seminar, students presented their projects, their current stage and estimated results. “The aim of my work is to carry out high resolution measurements of the atomic and electronic structure of selected molecules deposited on solid surfaces. The main objective is to study the chemical and physical properties of the molecular nanostructure by means of scanning probe microscopy,” explained Vijai Meena Santhini from India. Her project is being carried out at the Department of Physical Chemistry under the supervision of Pavel Jelínek.

The seminar covered a broad range of topics. In their projects, the students deal with plant species and sustainable development, biomechanics and the acoustics of human voice production, crown root initiation in barley, and ionization techniques for mass spectrometry, among others. “This year’s seminar was very successful. I and my colleagues agree that compared to last year, the level of presentations has improved and some of the students have already achieved interesting results,” said Miloslav Dušek, Vice-Dean for International Relations.

The Fischer scholarship recipients’ seminar is an annual event. This year it was held under the auspices of Martin Kubala, Dean of the Faculty of Science. The seminar enables students to communicate their projects’ results to an academic audience and also presents an opportunity for them to receive feedback on their research as well as see what their colleagues are working on.

“I am very grateful to the Faculty of Science for awarding me the Fischer scholarship. The seminar for Fischer scholars held every year is really a great opportunity for students to meet other foreign scholars and build contacts, new friendships. Scholars from different departments get an idea about the various kinds of work done by their colleagues in the Faculty of Science. This seminar also helps students gain the necessary self-confidence to present their annual progress in front of such a distinguished jury and thus is great practice for our future PhD defenses,” added Vijai Meena Santhini.
